Like most of the Dagestani group that has reshaped the lightweight and bantamweight picture, Nurmagomedov’s path runs through his late uncle Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the coach who built Khabib and Islam Makhachev. Usman Nurmagomedov told the PFL Dubai broadcast that their father pushed the brothers into sport, but it was Abdulmanap who saw title potential and made sure they were developed seriously. Umar followed his cousin into the UFC, debuting in 2022 with a first-round submission of Brian Kelleher at UFC 272. His UFC ledger now reads 7-1, all at bantamweight save that featherweight debut.
The style is recognizably Dagestani, with a modern striking layer on top. Nurmagomedov lands 4.08 significant strikes per minute at 64.3% accuracy — among the more efficient strikers in the division — and backs the volume with chain-wrestling and ride time. Takedown accuracy sits at 47.76%. The finishes skew to the mat: seven submissions, two knockouts. The Dvalishvili fight exposed a known question: when the grappling becomes a war of attrition against an elite cardio fighter, can he keep his output up for 25 minutes? His résumé is built on top-tier names. He outpointed Cory Sandhagen over five rounds at UFC Fight Night in August 2024, the win that got him the title shot. He stopped Raoni Barcelos by first-round TKO in January 2023, and decisioned Nate Maness and Bekzat Almakhan in between. After the Dvalishvili loss, he returned at UFC 321 in October 2025 and outworked Mario Bautista, snapping Bautista’s eight-fight win streak by unanimous decision. Three months later, at UFC 324 in January 2026, he added a unanimous-decision win over former flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo.
Nurmagomedov now sits at the front of a thin bantamweight contender pool, with Dvalishvili scheduled to defend against Petr Yan at UFC 323. He told CBS Sports there is “nobody else” who makes sense for the next title fight. Speaking to TNT Sports, he put the rematch in plain terms: “I have fire, like for revenge, I think fire more than for the title.” Whether the UFC delivers that fight in 2026 is the question that defines his year.
