Gaethje’s path to MMA started on the mat. He wrestled at the University of Northern Colorado, where he became an NCAA Division I All-American, before stepping into a cage on a whim during college. “This looks like so much fun. I want to try it,” he told UFC.com, recalling his amateur start. Seven amateur wins later, he turned pro. He built his name in World Series of Fighting, winning the lightweight title and defending it repeatedly, before signing with the UFC and debuting in 2017 with a knockout of Michael Johnson on The Ultimate Fighter Finale.

That win set up what comes next. Gaethje meets Ilia Topuria for the undisputed lightweight title in the main event of UFC Freedom 250, on the South Lawn of the White House on June 14, 2026. He is 0-2 in undisputed title fights, and his coach Trevor Wittman has told ESPN MMA and MMA Mania that the Topuria fight, win or lose, is the last one. He’s 37. The record reads 27-5. The body has banked years of damage. Gaethje is fighting for the one prize that has gotten away from him twice, and there isn’t a third chance after this.
